Free essential software for college

This is a list of great free software and services that will make your college / school life easier. If you are going to college, or you have a son, daughter, or a family member that will be starting school soon, then you already know some of the expenses involved. There is the usual; books, tuition, food, rent, computer. Open Office - OpenOffice.org is a basic office suite.  In many ways, it is similar to Microsoft Office.  You can edit and create documents for Word, Excel, Power Point and many other Microsoft Office format!  This program is essential if you need to submit college assignments in Microsoft Office format.

Tip: After you install Open Office – Go into preferences and set the default format to docx, xlsx, and other Microsoft formats. This will allow you to easily save all your document and email them to instructors without additional modifications.

PDF Creator – Creating PDF files is essential for any college students. For your everyday needs check out PrimoPDF creator. The free version will allow you to convert your project to PDF files without hassle.

Google Docs – Google Docs is a collection of online productivity software offered by Google. It contains Word, Excel, Power Point and other Google alternatives to Microsoft Office. The advantage of Google docs is that all your work is stored online so you never have to worry about forgetting or losing your computer. You can also collaborate with your classmates on documents regardless of where they are. Best of all, for students (and consumers) the products are free!

Dropbox: Dropbox is online file and sharing service. You can install it on your computer (Mac or PC) When installed on your computer it will allow you to backup your files (pictures, Videos, documents) and allow you to access them from anywhere. Dropbox initial free account is 2GB and works great for storing student files.

Skype: Skype is audio and video communication software. If you or someone you know is going to college away from home, Skype can help you keep in touch. Skype is also a great way for classmates to meet online face to face and have study sessions even when they are not in the same location. On Skype all calls from computer to computer are 100% free!
